Second graders at Holmes Elementary today repeated aloud an anti-gun pledge read by Commander Joseph Patterson. Patterson, along with other police officers across the city, read to Chicago Public School kindergarden through third grade students. The police visit is part of an effort to make children more aware of the dangers of guns. Vernita Cooperwood's daughter is in the class. She says the gun pledge is good, but more should be done.
COPPERWOOD: We need more mentoring, mentoring our youth. This is all they see. Its more to this than just selling drugs, gun violence. They need to see what's out there to show them there's more to life than just this.
At Holmes, the visit was poignant. Last week, 10 year old Arthur Jones, a fifth grader at Holmes, was killed when a bullet struck him just blocks from the school.
